The producer of my life story provides the following words you read; a gift the actor portrays, guided by a director who thinks he’s a successful writing entrepreneur. If you’re confused think about it this way – the trio can best be described as id, ego, and self.
What does this have to do with Wikipedia?
When we find ourselves in a position of vulnerability the self tends to become more empathetic to others who also have put themselves out there. Actions become guided by a determination of cause, meaning affection is the root of transactions. In other words, when seeking a specific goal, e.g., donations or support from other people, the challenge in the ‘ask’ is directing it to a crowd of people who likely won’t give a shit.
The logic which goes behind why people donate is so complicated yet simple – but only to those who get it. The first challenge is hijacking attention. People read ‘donate’ and automatically think, “I ain’t got time for that..”
Maybe I’m speaking for myself.
I use Wikipedia as a quick open source library as often as anyone reading this post does. Even after once reading false information on there I still verify it after checking it first. Personally, I ignored the request to donate to Wikipedia because I assumed enough will.
The gesture to donate finally hit me after reading words which touched my heart. Whoever from Wikipedia wrote it produced an order of words similar to a code unlocking the logic in me to withdraw $3.10 out of my bank account. They directed the message in a way I couldn’t ignore.
But I’m one of the few who get it – fundraising and trying to find individuals who care to donate is hard. And that’s an understatement.
Maybe I acted as if I cared because I felt a struggle through the message. They provide free information at the palm of our hands. An activity that once took hours to fulfill.
I grew up reading my father’s World Book Encyclopedias. This involved summer mornings researching 4lb books and flipping through pages until I found the information I needed. I was a rare kid…
Today, I type in my phone three words and the information is pulled out from the ether of space. Then boom, I have the information.
The gift in their giving is providing convenience to consumers. Wikipedia has dedicated editors who volunteer to help solve a problem. The impact is in the information which can also be verified. What Wikipedia has produced is a trusted source of information. Although questionable at moments, there’s a reason it’s at the top of your search results. Enough people have relied on it for over 15 years.
In the season of giving I did my part – and did so knowing I didn’t have much to give but a minimum of $3.10.
Wikipedia, #amwriting broke! And I kinda’ need it back.
No, I’m kidding.
In closing, the message finally reached me deep down. It’s what happens when you show your valued heart and goals to those who can relate. Coming from someone who ignored their message for years maybe enough will after these people find themselves in a similar position.
Not only did I give because the message was heart felt, but tis’ the season to give. Produce a giving heart. Direct it to a cause you care to see flourish. And maybe someone or something will act graciously for you.
Happy holidays everyone!
